Our Expert Take
The Chase Freedom Flex® offers a high rewards rate on categories that rotate every few months, and Walmart is often included at least one quarter a year. PayPal is also sometimes included as a rotating bonus category, and Walmart allows customers to make both in-store and online purchases via the third-party payment service. With several other opportunities to earn bonus rewards throughout the year, the Freedom Flex can be a great choice for someone who doesn’t shop exclusively at Walmart.
Why We Like It
New cardholders will get a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 20.49% – 29.24% applies. Balance transfer fee of up to 5% (min. $5) of the amount of each transfer applies.
You’ll also receive a complimentary three-month DoorDash DashPass when activated by December 31, 2024 and 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025. The card also includes cellphone protection, purchase protection and extended warranty protection, giving you additional peace of mind when it comes to your purchases. Even though it’s not a premium travel card, you’ll enjoy trip cancellation or interruption insurance when you book with the card.
What We Don’t Like
The card’s base rewards earning is low, so this is not the best option for Walmart purchases unless you’re earning at the elevated rewards rate.
Who It’s Best For
This card is ideal for those who can maximize the quarterly bonus categories while also enjoying a solid earning structure throughout the year.

If you’re looking for premium travel rewards and benefits and flexible rewards on Walmart purchases, look no further than the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. The card offers a high base rewards rate, flexible travel redemptions and premium perks to compensate for its annual fee (rates & fees).
Why We Like It
In addition to an early spend bonus, you’ll earn 10,000 bonus miles each year starting on your first anniversary. What’s more, you’ll get $300 in credits toward travel reservations through Capital One Travel each year. These two benefits alone offset the card’s annual fee.
You’ll also get cellphone protection when you use the card to pay your phone bill, an application credit toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® membership and complimentary access to Capital One, Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges when you fly.
When you’re ready to redeem rewards, you can use your points to cover travel booked through Capital One Travel, or you can simply request a statement credit for a travel purchase you’ve recently made with the card. You can also transfer your miles to several airline and hotel loyalty programs.
What We Don’t Like
The card’s high annual fee is only offset by travel purchases through the Capital One travel portal, so if you’re not booking travel there, you might be better served with a different Capital One card like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.
Who It’s Best For
On top of being a great option for your Walmart purchases, this card is best for those who are also looking for a premium travel experience with rewards to match.

If you’re looking for lofty perks without a lofty annual fee (rates & fees), the Venture X fits the bill. While other cards with elite benefits run nearly $700 a year, you’ll only pay a little more than half that for the Venture X. And you’ll still get Capital One and Priority Pass airport lounge access for you and your guests, an annual travel credit and solid earnings on everyday purchases.
Pros & Cons
- Annual fee lower than others in its category
- Annual travel credit through Capital One Travel and anniversary miles alone could justify the annual fee
- Miles are easy to earn and easy to use
- Lack of domestic airline and upscale hotel travel partners
- Capital One lounge network in its infancy
- Lack of hotel status benefits

Our Expert Take
The Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees) offers a long list of valuable travel and lifestyle benefits avid travelers regularly seek.
Why We Like It
Cardholders receive a monthly credit when using the card to pay for Walmart+. The benefit is worth $155 annually and includes free delivery from your store, free shipping with no order minimum, 10 cents off per gallon of fuel at Exxon, Mobil, Walmart and Murphy fuel stations, a Paramount+ streaming subscription and more.
The card also offers a suite of other premium perks, including credits every year toward airline incidental fees, digital entertainment, prepaid hotel bookings through Amex Travel, Uber Cash, Saks Fifth Avenue purchases, an Equinox+ subscription and others.
You’ll also get complimentary access to several airport lounge networks, elite status with Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy, enhanced access to expedited airport security screening and more travel benefits.
What We Don’t Like
The Amex Platinum doesn’t offer retail shopping as a bonus category so you’ll only earn 1 point per dollar on your purchases at Walmart. And if you can’t take advantage of most of the card’s perks, its steep annual fee may not be worth it.
Who It’s Best For
While the card’s Walmart+ membership can help you with shopping at Walmart, it is best for those who can take advantage of the ultra-premium travel benefits while traveling.

Why We Like It
As a new cardholder, you’ll get a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, then a 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% variable APR applies. You’ll also get up to $600 in cellphone protection when you use your card to pay your phone bill (subject to a $25 deductible). If you’re on the road, you can have your rental car protected with an auto rental collision damage waiver.
What We Don’t Like

Our Expert Take
Whether you shop exclusively at Walmart or spread your spending across multiple retailers, the U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewards® Visa Signature® Card* offers fantastic rewards on two retailers of your choice each quarter and an above-average base rewards rate on other purchases.
Why We Like It
The card’s spending cap on its 6% rewards rate limits your cash-back potential, but with a high base rewards rate, it can still outperform similar cards.
What We Don’t Like
The card’s annual fee after the first year makes it less attractive if you’re not maxing out the bonus rewards every quarter, and there are no other notable benefits to help offset that cost. Cardholders can expect a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95.
Who It’s Best For
This card is most attractive to those seeking cash-back rewards on their purchases. And with a rather simple rewards program, they can redeem in a handful of ways ranging from a deposit to a U.S. Bank account to gift cards and statement credits.
Pros & Cons
- The quarterly bonus rewards structure outearns similarly-structured peers
- Bonus categories include less-commonly bonused options like warehouse stores and big-box retailers
- Cool factor: Unique LED technology lights up logo when you use tap-to-pay
- You must enroll each quarter into two retailers and one purchase category of your choice or all purchases only earn 1.5% cash back
- U.S. Bank doesn’t have any transfer partners so redemption options are limited
- The card charges 3% of each foreign transaction
Card Details

- Earn up to 6% cash back each quarter on combined eligible purchases from two retailers of choice ($1,500 limit); 3% cash back each quarter in one everyday category of choice ($1,500 limit) and 1.5% cash back on everything else.

What We Don’t Like

Pros & Cons

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees) is a cash-back workhorse that bonuses spending on categories including online retail purchases, gas stations and more importantly, supermarkets—including Walmart. It has no annual fee plus a few other perks and protections.
Why We Like It
With this card, you will earn 3% back (up to $6,000 in purchases a year) at U.S. supermarkets including Walmart. Cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed for a statement credit. Additionally, cardholders receive an up to $84 a year credit toward a Disney Bundle for eligible auto-renewing subscriptions, and up to $15 a month in statement credits toward their auto-renewing subscriptions to Home Chef. Like many other Amex cards, access to Amex Offers is included, potentially helping you save even more. Enrollment is required for select benefits.
If you’re ever on the road, the card comes with car rental loss and damage insurance¹ should you ever need it. Purchase protection² is provided to cover your purchases against accidental damage or theft under some conditions.
What We Don’t Like
Unfortunately, the 3% cash-back rate is capped at $6,000 annually, so your potential earnings are relatively limited, and you will be earning just 1% after you hit that number.
